History of Nonna's

Painted Door Gallery was created with the vision and desire to provide a unique and enjoyable shopping experience. Painted Door opened for business on September 19, 1991 at 8601 S Western in Oklahoma City with 4,000 square feet of retail space offering antiques, decorative accessories, home furnishings, gourmet food items, bath and body care and a wide variety of collectibles. Painted Door continued to expand its possibilities and opened Nonna’s Bakery in April 1995. The beginnings of the bakery operation started small. Each morning Avis Scaramucci, owner and operator, would gather with one baker to produce Avis’s personal dessert recipes for the gift shop patrons. The bakery items were so popular that soon a lunch menu and a dining area were added.

Also, the Cedar Spring Farms greenhouse operation was created in order to provide the freshest produce available to Nonna’s. Nonna’s Bakery & Café became the preferred lunch spot, drawing people from all over the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. Avis began to realize she could grow her vision even further, and set her sights on the rapidly growing entertainment district, Bricktown, located in downtown Oklahoma City. Shortly after celebrating its 10th anniversary, Nonna’s served its final meal at the Western location on May 13, 2005.

Both Nonna’s and the Painted Door moved to Bricktown in the spring of 2005, nestled in a more than 90-year-old refurbished and beautifully-remodeled warehouse. Many local artisans were featured in the design as well as décor of the Nonna’s and the Painted Door downtown location including plaster architectural walls, faux wall finishes, mouth-blown glass fixtures, mural and wall painting, all showcasing Oklahoma talent in the casual elegance of Nonna’s! Nonna’s Bakery & Café became Nonna’s Euro-American Ristorante and Bar, complete with the patisserie (still preparing and serving Avis’s personal dessert creations), large formal dining areas, the addition of the ‘Purple Bar’ on the second floor, and three levels of banquet space. The 22,000-square-feet facility offered convenience, comfort, and a beautiful and unique setting; the perfect location for a celebratory meal, a business meeting, or a lavish event or reception.
